No Completion Date for Ireland’s New Children’s Hospital as Defects Persist

The missing date signals further delay to handover.

Overview

  • At a parliamentary hearing, officials said there is still no finish date and that 12,414 defects remain, with roughly three quarters of the 5,728 rooms offered at completion standard.
  • The development board said BAM missed its latest substantial completion milestone and blamed weak staffing, poor supervision and rework, while BAM cited design changes and normal final checks.
  • Projected costs have climbed to about €2.2 billion from an original €650 million plan, and the project has spent €1.648 billion so far.
  • Children’s Health Ireland reported only partial installation of medical, non-medical and lab gear and said opening will come about seven months after handover due to commissioning.
  • The Irish Medical Organisation condemned the public blame game between state bodies and the builder and urged a new health infrastructure law, warning the overrun could squeeze beds and theatres elsewhere.
