NMDC Hits 50 Million Tonnes of Iron Ore in FY26 in First for an Indian Miner

The Navratna producer credits its NMDC 2.0 modernization for the leap supporting India’s 300 MT steel ambition.

Overview

  • NMDC reported producing 50 million tonnes of iron ore in FY 2025–26 ahead of the fiscal close, the first time any Indian miner has reached that level in a year.
  • Production has climbed from about 30 MT in 2015 to 50 MT, with nearly one-fifth of current capacity added over the last four years.
  • Chairman and managing director Amitava Mukherjee called the milestone proof of rapid progress under “NMDC 2.0,” citing sharper execution and responsible mining.
  • The state-run company, a Navratna CPSE under the Ministry of Steel, operates highly mechanised mines in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka that underpin domestic ore supply.
  • NMDC frames the scale-up as support for India’s 300 MT steel capacity target by 2030 and says it will keep prioritizing technology upgrades and operational excellence.
