Overview
- Two Armed Support Unit members, Stephen P. Walsh and Stephen Walsh, testified they arrived around 12:38pm to find CPR underway and were told a man had been shot after attempting to stab gardaí.
- They described a large gathering and what one called a very hostile environment, with shouting from the house and concerns for officer safety during efforts to assist George Nkencho.
- Stephen P. Walsh said he observed four gunshot wounds to the center of the chest and a possible fifth near the nipple, and noted a knife with a black handle, a pepper spray canister and a taser cartridge at the scene.
- Retired Sgt James Ryan said four taser rounds were discharged in quick succession over 21 seconds at 12:35pm, and he explained that bulky clothing can limit taser effectiveness.
- Garda A’s colleagues said he appeared deeply concerned for Mr Nkencho’s welfare, while earlier evidence from Garda A stated he fired six shots after alleged lunges with a knife when taser and pepper spray attempts failed.
