Nkencho Inquest Hears ASU Officers Describe 'Hostile' Scene and Taser Use Before Fatal Shooting

Jurors are hearing new testimony on non‑lethal tactics and post‑shooting care from colleagues who reached the driveway minutes after the gunfire.

Overview

  • Two Armed Support Unit members, Stephen P. Walsh and Stephen Walsh, testified they arrived around 12:38pm to find CPR underway and were told a man had been shot after attempting to stab gardaí.
  • They described a large gathering and what one called a very hostile environment, with shouting from the house and concerns for officer safety during efforts to assist George Nkencho.
  • Stephen P. Walsh said he observed four gunshot wounds to the center of the chest and a possible fifth near the nipple, and noted a knife with a black handle, a pepper spray canister and a taser cartridge at the scene.
  • Retired Sgt James Ryan said four taser rounds were discharged in quick succession over 21 seconds at 12:35pm, and he explained that bulky clothing can limit taser effectiveness.
  • Garda A’s colleagues said he appeared deeply concerned for Mr Nkencho’s welfare, while earlier evidence from Garda A stated he fired six shots after alleged lunges with a knife when taser and pepper spray attempts failed.
