NJ Transit Sets $150 World Cup Train Fare to MetLife, $80 Shuttle

The agency says the special pricing recovers a projected $48 million shortfall without passing costs to commuters.

Overview

  • NJ Transit, which unveiled its plan Friday, set round-trip fares at $150 for trains from New York Penn Station and $80 for shuttle buses for the eight MetLife matches including the final.
  • The agency will sell 40,000 rail round trips per game starting May 13 to match ticket holders who must buy in advance and show an NJ Transit wristband to board before and after matches.
  • Rail service between Penn Station and Secaucus will be restricted to matchgoers starting four hours before kickoff, and regular riders will be directed to PATH and NJ Transit buses at no extra cost.
  • Officials estimate $62 million in total transport expenses with $10.6 million in federal aid and $3.6 million from the host committee, leaving about $48 million to be covered by event riders.
  • FIFA disputed New Jersey’s approach and pointed to host rules allowing transport “at cost,” while other cities plan low or unchanged fares such as Houston, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, and Boston set an $80 round-trip rail price.
