NJ Transit Sets $150 Round-Trip Fare for World Cup Trains to MetLife

Officials say the surcharge will recover $48 million in event costs.

Overview

  • NJ Transit confirmed Friday it will charge $150 for a round trip between Manhattan’s Penn Station and MetLife Stadium on World Cup match days, up from the usual $12.90.
  • Only fans with valid match tickets may use the trains, and four hours before kickoff Penn Station service will pivot to MetLife-bound trips with a cap of 40,000 rail seats per game, with sales starting May 13.
  • The host committee will run $80 round-trip shuttle buses from Port Authority and Grand Central, and about 5,000 parking spots at the nearby American Dream mall are listed at $225.
  • Transit leaders plan to spend $62 million to move fans and say $14 million in grants still leaves a $48 million gap that the special fare and the suspension of discounts are meant to fill.
  • New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill urged FIFA to help pay after the group said host deals promised free fan transport, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul called the price excessive as some other host cities keep regular fares or lower surcharges.
