NIV Confirms Nipah in Two West Bengal Nurses as Contacts Hospitalised

Officials have begun rapid contact tracing across three districts with isolation orders for over 120 people.

  • National Institute of Virology, Pune, reconfirmed Nipah infection in the two Barasat nurses, with one in a coma and the other on ventilator support.
  • A doctor and a nurse who were exposed have been admitted to Beliaghata ID Hospital in Kolkata, and their samples are being tested.
  • Two more nurses with Nipah-like symptoms were admitted to Beliaghata ID Hospital, their samples were collected, and one Barasat hospital RMO tested negative at AIIMS Kalyani’s VRDL.
  • Tracing is underway across North 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman and Nadia, and more than 120 identified contacts have been told to isolate while several samples are processed.
  • The Centre has deployed a National Joint Outbreak Response Team and activated NCDC’s PHEOC, as West Bengal issues helplines, readies isolation capacity and urges hygiene precautions.
