Nissan to Cut 900 Jobs in Europe as Restructuring Hits Catalonia and Sunderland

The cuts are part of Nissan’s Re:Nissan turnaround after steep losses.

Overview

  • Nissan, which disclosed the plan Tuesday, set a target of 900 reductions across Europe under its Re:Nissan overhaul.
  • In Catalonia, three Barcelona-area sites will enter Spain’s collective layoff process known as an ERE, covering the Zona Franca technical hub and two El Prat centers that together employ 569 people.
  • The Sunderland plant will consolidate to one production line, with office, warehouse and logistics roles targeted rather than assembly jobs, according to the company and Reuters.
  • Union representatives in Barcelona report staff fear an almost total cut at those sites, with details and timing to be defined in formal consultations now starting.
  • Company sources say Spain’s Ávila and Cantabria sites are not expected to be affected, and the 900 figure equals about 10% of Nissan’s roughly 9,300 European employees, according to Reuters.
