Nintendo Will Sell Switch 2 With User‑Replaceable Batteries in Europe and End Original Switch Sales in 2027

The change responds to new EU battery rules that require user‑replaceable cells; Nintendo will shift sales to revised Switch 2 models with staggered country rollout.

Overview

  • Nintendo confirmed it will begin replacing selected Switch 2 hardware and accessories with versions that have user‑replaceable batteries starting in summer 2026 and continuing through early 2027 on a phased schedule.
  • From mid‑February 2027 Nintendo will stop supplying the original Switch family — Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED — to European retailers and will remove those models from the Nintendo Store.
  • The revised products keep the same functions as current models but use serviceable batteries and show small specification changes, for example a roughly 1% smaller Switch 2 battery with a ~10–14 gram weight increase and about a 16% lower battery capacity in the Pro Controller.
  • Availability will vary by country, consumers cannot choose whether they receive a revised unit because retailers will replace existing stock as it sells, and some legacy accessories will not be reworked and will be discontinued in Europe.
  • Nintendo will sell official battery replacement kits through its European Nintendo Store to support the revised models, a compliance step driven by the EU Batteries Regulation that could accelerate consumer moves to Switch 2 and alter regional supply patterns.
