Nintendo to Sell Switch 2 Revisions With User‑Replaceable Batteries in Europe

EU rules requiring easier battery replacement have forced Nintendo to redesign devices for European markets.

Overview

  • Nintendo of Europe announced Monday that, starting in summer 2026, selected Switch 2 consoles and accessories will be replaced on a rolling, country‑by‑country basis with versions that include user‑replaceable batteries.
  • The company published revised specs showing only small physical changes such as a Switch 2 battery of 5172mAh (about 1% smaller) and weight rises of roughly 10–14g when Joy‑Con 2 controllers are attached.
  • Nintendo said functionality will remain the same between current and revised units and that buyers on Nintendo Store cannot choose which version they receive because older stock will be automatically replaced by revised models.
  • Nintendo will stop selling Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED on Nintendo Store and to retailers in Europe from mid‑February 2027 and will continue manufacturing those models through 2026 for existing supply.
  • The company will offer official battery replacement kits for revised products on Nintendo Store in Europe and warned availability may vary by country and retailer due to manufacturing and distribution timing.
