Nintendo Releases Switch 2 Firmware 22.0.0 With 1080p Handheld Mode Boost

The opt-in setting makes the console behave as docked to raise resolution in older titles while reducing battery life.

Overview

  • Handheld Mode Boost lets many legacy Switch games render at 1080p in portable use and can improve frame rates.
  • The feature is off by default and can be turned on or off in system settings on Switch 2.
  • Nintendo notes possible side effects such as a disabled touchscreen and Joy-Con being treated like a Pro Controller.
  • Update 22.0.0 has been available since March 16 and is also offered for the original Switch with fewer changes.
  • The patch adds quality-of-life updates including GameChat improvements, friend-list notes, a detailed storage breakdown, and separate Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, and NFC toggles in airplane mode.
