Overview
- Nintendo announced that Switch Online subscription fees in Japan will increase effective July 1, changing single-month, three-month and annual plans as well as family and Expansion Pack tiers.
- The company published the new Japanese prices: 1 month ¥400, 3 months ¥1,000, 12 months ¥3,000; family 12 months ¥5,800; Expansion Pack 12 months ¥5,900 and Expansion Pack family ¥9,900.
- Switch Online provides online multiplayer, cloud save backups, mobile voice chat/GameChat and access to Nintendo’s retro game libraries, which are included under the revised pricing.
- Reporting links the change to the yen’s weakness and follows recent Switch 2 hardware price rises in Japan, while Nintendo has scheduled Western hardware price increases for September but has not confirmed subscription changes outside Japan.
- The increase raises the cost of a 12-month individual plan in Japan closer to U.S. levels and will directly raise household gaming costs in Japan, with possible wider pricing consequences if Nintendo extends the change to other regions.
