Nintendo Price Hike Triggers Sharp Fall in Switch 2 Weekly Sales

The Japan price increase that took effect on May 25 appears to have reversed a pre-hike buying surge, signaling a shift in Nintendo's near-term sales outlook.

Overview

  • Famitsu’s retail chart for the week of May 25–31 shows Switch 2 sold 31,751 units in Japan, an about 87% drop from the hundreds-of-thousands weekly totals recorded during the pre-hike buying surge.
  • Even after the decline, Switch 2 remained the top-selling console in Japan that week and Nintendo reported it sold 2.49 million Switch 2 units in the quarter to March 31, bringing global sold-in totals to 19.86 million.
  • The sharp fall follows a short-term rush to buy consoles before the price increase, with Famitsu data showing weekly Switch 2 sales of 214,438, 217,922 and 247,880 in the weeks just before the hike was applied in Japan.
  • Nintendo confirmed the Japan price rise took effect on May 25 and said the same MSRP increases will roll out in the United States, Europe and Canada on September 1, with the U.S. model rising $50 to $499.99.
  • Broader early momentum remains: Switch 2 hit 1 million sales in the U.K. within 52 weeks, faster than the original Switch, but Nintendo has revised its next-year unit target lower to reflect changed market conditions.
