Overview
- Nintendo has announced it will build the Technology Development Center in Kyoto to serve as a new research and development base for both software and hardware.
- The company estimates construction will cost ¥121 billion (about $750 million) and has published specifications including a floor area of 49,305.87 square meters and nine above‑ground floors plus one below ground.
- The site is at 11-1 Hokotate-cho, Kamitoba, Minami-ku, Kyoto on land Nintendo acquired from the City of Kyoto in 2022 after a formal proposal process that began in 2021.
- Nintendo says the project, which it previously referred to internally as Corporate Headquarters Development Center, Building No. 2, is planned for completion in March 2029 and the company notes cost and schedule remain subject to change.
- The center continues Nintendo's long-standing Kyoto presence and is likely to expand the company’s R&D capacity, with potential effects on hiring, local construction activity, and the company’s future product development pipeline.
