Nintendo Details Switch 2’s Dedicated ‘C’ Button for One-Press GameChat

The company describes close UI/UX–hardware collaboration that finalized the control through rapid prototyping before software.

Overview

  • A Nintendo recruitment post explains the choice to add a physical button so GameChat can be launched with a single action.
  • The button uses a simple “C” icon positioned below the Home button to align with A and B and to convey communication, with Nintendo also showing alternate icon proposals considered.
  • UI/UX designers worked with hardware and product teams in daily meetings, building numerous prototypes to refine size, placement, feel, and icon before hardware was locked.
  • GameChat supports group voice for up to 12 people and enables real-time screen sharing during play on Switch 2.
  • Use of GameChat requires a Switch Online subscription, with a GameChat Welcome Offer allowing free access through March 31, 2026.
