Nintendo 22.5.0 Update Turns Original Switch eShop Into a Native, Much Faster App

Replacing the Switch’s browser-based store with a local app fixes long-standing speed problems while adding a purchase PIN and simpler video controls.

Overview

  • Nintendo rolled out system firmware version 22.5.0 for both the original Switch and Switch 2 on June 15–16, 2026, delivering platform-specific changes and general stability fixes.
  • On the original Switch the eShop layout was redesigned to reflect system themes and now runs as a local app instead of a browser page, which multiple outlets and testers report makes browsing far faster and more responsive.
  • The Switch update adds a User-Verification PIN to confirm access to the eShop and use of saved payment methods and introduces ZL/ZR 10-second rewind and fast-forward controls for full-screen videos.
  • Switch 2’s 22.5.0 patch focuses on accessibility by adding Dutch and Russian to Text-to-Speech and GameChat speech↔text settings while also receiving the same stability and media-playback tweaks.
  • The change addresses a near-decade-old complaint about the original eShop’s sluggishness and should make it easier for users to browse and buy games, though it does not alter the underlying catalog or remove low-quality listings.
