Nine of Ten Sunscreens Sold on Temu, Shein and AliExpress Fail Safety Tests

Overview

• Que Choisir Ensemble published laboratory results on Wednesday showing nine of the ten sunscreens it bought from Temu, Shein and AliExpress were non‑compliant or dangerous.
• Six products delivered far less sun protection than claimed, with measured SPF values up to 98% below the label and some as low as SPF 2, while four samples offered effectively no UV blocking.
• Three tested items contained a chemical recently banned in the EU as an endocrine disruptor (identified by the association as ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate), and one otherwise acceptable product also included that banned ingredient.
• Temu, Shein and AliExpress say they removed the flagged listings and will carry out audits, but Que Choisir Ensemble has contacted Arcom and the DGCCRF and asked for temporary marketplace restrictions because regulators have not yet announced enforcement steps.
• The case highlights weak traceability on ultra‑low‑cost marketplaces, the risk that unsafe products could reappear under new labels, and adds to growing EU scrutiny of platforms after recent sanctions such as a large fine for Temu in May.
