Nikon Launches Z R Cinema Camera With 6K RAW, RED R3D NE and 32-Bit Float Audio

The first outcome of Nikon’s RED acquisition targets mobile filmmakers with cinema-grade workflows in a compact Z-mount body.

Overview

  • The Z R records up to 6K/60p RAW and supports R3D NE, N-RAW and ProRes RAW HQ with RED Colour Science for seamless postproduction pipelines.
  • A 24.5 MP partially stacked full-frame sensor offers dual-base ISO 800/6400 and more than 15 stops of dynamic range to curb rolling shutter and preserve detail.
  • Nikon replaces a viewfinder with a 4-inch, 1,000-nit DCI-P3 touchscreen that can load LUTs for on-set preview and works with external monitors.
  • Weighing 540 g, the weather-sealed, fanless body adds 5-axis IBIS, hybrid autofocus with subject detection, and dual card slots for CFexpress/XQD and microSD.
  • Nikon claims the first internal 32-bit float audio and introduces the ME-D10 digital shotgun mic sold separately for about €299, with shipping planned for late October at €2,349 body-only or €2,949 in a kit.
