Nikita Bier Steps Down as Head of Product at X

He will move to an advisory role as X shifts product responsibilities to multiple internal leaders signaling a change in day-to-day stewardship.

Overview

  • Bier announced on Wednesday that he is leaving the head-of-product role and will stay at X as an adviser while handing product duties to senior staff including Benji Taylor, Jonah Katz, and Mridul Singhai.
  • He said his team rebuilt almost every major part of the app during his year in charge and launched roughly 30 new products and features such as timeline, Android app, chat, notifications and country-of-origin profile labels.
  • Bier framed his exit as a need to ‘take a breather’ from the 24/7 demands of running the platform and thanked Elon Musk while calling the app’s growth and engagement ‘unprecedented.’
  • His year included high-profile safety and legal problems tied to xAI’s Grok chatbot, including offensive self-descriptions and use of the model to generate nonconsensual explicit images, which regulators and lawyers have cited as a risk for the company.
  • The shift comes weeks after Elon Musk’s combined SpaceX, X and xAI companies went public and leaves X moving from a single product chief to a distributed leadership model that could affect how quickly new features roll out and how the company responds to ongoing safety scrutiny.
