Nigrán Deploys Drones Including AI Unit to Police San Juan Beach Celebrations

Authorities say the surveillance push aims to better protect recently restored dunes and speed emergency response.

Overview

  • Officials finalized the special San Juan plan on Tuesday, June 16, confirming deployment of Guardia Civil drones, the Pegaso unmanned aircraft team, and one drone reported to use artificial intelligence to detect and locate people on Praia América and Panxón.
  • Access controls will begin the morning of June 23 to bar entry with wood, shovels and other tools used for bonfires or digging, and authorities warned that violations will be sanctioned under local regulations.
  • A Posto de Mando Avanzado will coordinate roughly 200 personnel from Guardia Civil de Tráfico, SEPRONA, Policía Nacional, Policía Autonómica, Policía Local, Protección Civil and volunteers, and the plan includes a field hospital and a 'punto lila' for sexual-violence prevention and response.
  • Environmental measures include protecting recently recovered dunes, distributing waste bags at beach accesses, volunteer patrols under the #SanXoanSenLixo campaign and special cleaning teams to speed post-event restoration of the sand
  • Officials say real-time aerial monitoring will speed detection of bonfires and holes, improve coordination between services and aim to reduce ecosystem damage while enforcement follows a regional framework of fines and sanctions for unauthorized fires.
