Nightsleeper Season 2 Set to Sail as Drama Moves From Train to Ferry

The BBC has greenlit a creative reset with a new producer to leverage the show’s strong launch and international sales.

Overview

  • The BBC confirmed on June 19, 2026 that Nightsleeper will return for a second season on BBC One and iPlayer.
  • Creator Nick Leather has said the new story will play out on a Belfast–Liverpool passenger ferry and teased six hours of “non-stop thrills and spills.”
  • Production duties will move from the now-closed Euston Films to Element Pictures, with James Kent and Chris Baugh attached to direct and filming planned in Belfast later this year with support from Northern Ireland Screen.
  • Reports say Season 2 will use a largely new ensemble and that series leads Joe Cole and Alexandra Roach are not expected to return, while some international platform deals such as BritBox U.S. have not yet been confirmed.
  • Season 1’s big audience and sales to roughly 176 territories provided the commercial case for renewal and reflect a wider BBC tendency to back proven hits during a period of tighter development budgets.
