Night Closures and Speed Limits Roll Out as Amphibian Migration Begins in Germany

Measures aim to cut roadkill by guiding protected amphibians safely to breeding waters.

Overview

  • Heiligenhaus has fully closed a section of Kettwiger Straße from February 16 to April 30, introduced a 30 km/h limit on Abtskücher Straße, and posted amphibian warning signs on Flurweg and Angerweg.
  • Bad Dürkheim county will close the K16 near Wachenheim nightly from 19:00 to 06:00 starting February 20, with police enforcement and timing adjusted to weather and observed movements.
  • Fürstenfeldbruck is installing amphibian fences and will impose short-notice night closures as needed, with 30 km/h limits in Grafrath’s Bahnhofstraße and on Parsbergstraße, plus bus diversions affecting Line 852 stops and an evening route change on Line 838.
  • Erfurt has begun deploying mobile fences and using tunnels, including maintenance of the Steigerwald underpass, with volunteers transferring animals from collection buckets to ensure safe crossings.
  • Conservation groups report migration starts on mild, rainy nights above about 5°C and may pause if it turns colder, with officials citing special protection status and many native species on Red Lists as the basis for the measures.
