Nick Kyrgios Provisionally Suspended After Positive Test for Cocaine Metabolite

The International Tennis Integrity Agency will pursue disciplinary proceedings that could lead to a formal ban depending on whether the use is judged to have been in competition.

Overview

  • A urine sample Kyrgios gave at the Mallorca ATP event on June 22 tested positive for benzoylecgonin and a WADA‑accredited lab confirmed the result on July 17.
  • The ITIA placed Kyrgios under a provisional suspension effective August 4 and he has not filed an appeal against that measure.
  • Kyrgios publicly admitted the error on Instagram, apologised, said he accepts full responsibility and announced a 28‑day withdrawal from social media and public life.
  • Under WADA rules, cocaine is banned in competition but use outside competition can lead to lighter sanctions, so the ITIA hearing will be key to determining any final ban.
  • The case adds to Kyrgios’s recent struggles with injuries, a steep ranking fall and a limited 2026 playing schedule, and the next steps to watch are the ITIA hearing, any appeal and the sanction the agency sets.
