Nick Kurtz Activated, Max Muncy Optioned to Triple-A

Kurtz’s return restores a leading on-base bat and signals fresh roster choices as the A’s approach the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

Overview

  • The Athletics reinstated first baseman Nick Kurtz from the 10-day injured list and immediately optioned infielder Max Muncy to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced.
  • Kurtz left the club earlier this month with a right thumb capsule sprain and missed the All-Star Game while completing a short rehab before being cleared to return.
  • On the season Kurtz has been one of Oakland’s best offensive players, ranking near the top of the majors in walks and posting a .405 on-base percentage with 20 home runs.
  • Muncy’s stay in Oakland was brief; he went 0-for-3 in two games before being sent back to Triple-A, where he had been hitting .362 with five homers and 14 RBI in 12 games.
  • The moves come as the A’s struggle through a poor July and sit well under .500, a position that makes them likely sellers at the trade deadline and gives added weight to decisions about which players to keep or trade.
