NHTSA Recalls 14,575 Tesla Model Ys Over Missing Weight-Certification Labels

Missing federal weight labels can lead owners to overload vehicles, prompting Tesla to inspect recalled cars and affix stickers in person.

Overview

  • The recall was filed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on May 22, 2026 for 14,575 Model Y SUVs produced between November 17, 2025 and April 21, 2026.
  • NHTSA says the absent stickers show the vehicle’s maximum loaded weight and tire information and that their absence could increase the risk of crashes if cars are overloaded.
  • Tesla traced the problem to an automated vision-scanning tool at its Fremont factory that performed inconsistently, fixed the tool and added manual checks in production.
  • Tesla estimates about 45% of the vehicles in the recall actually lack the sticker and will inspect affected cars for free, adding the label when needed; owners should receive remedy notices around July 17, 2026.
  • No crashes, injuries, warranty claims, or field reports have been linked to the missing labels so far and the recall follows several other Tesla actions this month that involved both software and physical fixes.
