NHS Launches Recruitment of 49,000 for GlobalMinds Precision Mental Health Study

The three-year Akrivia–Cardiff programme links at-home DNA samples with NHS records to enable more precise diagnosis.

Overview

  • From this week, NHS DigiTrials is inviting nearly 50,000 eligible adults with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis or major depression across 10 participating trust areas in England and Wales.
  • About 2,000 participants have already enrolled, with a planned additional cohort of roughly 1,000 people with dementia.
  • Volunteers provide blood or saliva at home or via visits, complete online questionnaires, and consent to link their NHS medical records, with targeted support offered for those facing access barriers.
  • Participants receive up to a £50 voucher and retain the right to withdraw at any time without giving a reason, and no data are shared with researchers without permission.
  • The study is led by Akrivia Health with Cardiff University, supported by NIHR and funded by Wellcome and Johnson & Johnson, aiming to build a large linked dataset to inform personalised treatments and later expand internationally.
