NHS Boss Defends Trans Nurse’s Access to Women’s Changing Room as Tribunal Hears Evidence

Seven Darlington nurses challenge the trust’s policy in a Newcastle hearing over how managers balanced inclusion with staff privacy.

Overview

  • Andrew Thacker, the trust’s workforce director, told the tribunal any concern depended on whether the person was threatening and said Rose Henderson’s presence was no different to having a larger woman in the room.
  • Jane Shields, a nurse witness, said managers stressed appearing “diverse and accepting” and were wary of being labelled a “bullying trust.”
  • The seven claimants allege sexual harassment, discrimination, victimisation and breaches of the right to a private life after Henderson was allowed to use the women’s changing facilities.
  • Nurses said a small former office provided in 2024 as an alternative changing area was unsuitable and left them feeling humiliated and unsupported.
  • The trust declined detailed comment during the ongoing proceedings, which are hearing evidence and are expected to run into mid-November.
