NHAI Plans AI Dashcam Network to Monitor 40,000 Km of Highways

Officials frame the move as a shift to continuous, data-led highway upkeep after years of safety concerns.

Overview

  • NHAI’s Dashcam Analytics Services will mount high-resolution cameras on Route Patrol Vehicles and use AI and machine learning to flag issues in real time.
  • The models are designed to identify more than 30 defect types, including potholes, cracks, worn surfaces, faded lane markings, defective streetlights, signage problems, encroachments and illegal parking.
  • All footage will feed a central digital platform with AI analytics and interactive dashboards, with oversight organized across five management zones.
  • NHAI also plans regular night-time surveys to assess visibility, road markings, reflectors and highway lighting effectiveness.
  • Reports cite official data showing 9,438 pothole-related deaths from 2020 to 2024, while coverage notes no disclosed timeline, pilot results, procurement process or vendor partners for the rollout.
