Newmarket Jockey Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter in 2025 Pub Fight Death

Sentencing is set for June 4 at Peterborough Crown Court.

Overview

  • Levi Williams, 26, admitted manslaughter on Friday at Peterborough Crown Court and was granted bail pending sentencing on June 4.
  • Police said a four-person altercation broke out on Newmarket High Street on March 8, 2025, leaving 71-year-old Richard Wingrove critically injured and he died on March 18.
  • Williams was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, later rearrested and charged with murder, and prosecutors have now accepted the lesser plea.
  • Two other men detained after the fight, a 24-year-old on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and a 45-year-old on suspicion of affray, remain released under investigation as inquiries continue.
  • The case has drawn scrutiny in racing’s hub of Newmarket because Williams is a licensed jockey who had returned from an 18-month ban for cocaine and had 12 winners before the incident.
