Newfoundland Moves to Commercialize Jeanne d'Arc Basin Gas

The move seeks investment to position the province as an export supplier of liquefied natural gas to overseas markets.

Overview

  • The provincial Phase I and II assessments, released Monday, June 1, estimate recoverable gas in the Jeanne d'Arc Basin between 19.8 and 35.4 trillion cubic feet with a best estimate of 27.6 Tcf.
  • The government announced targeted consultations on a new offshore natural gas royalty framework and will carry out a feasibility and investment-opportunity study that may include bringing gas ashore for liquefaction.
  • The Canada–Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Energy Regulator opened a call for bids on June 2 for 16 offshore parcels totalling about 3.6 million hectares with bids judged on work commitments, a CAD$10 million minimum work commitment, a Nov. 4 deadline and expected licence approvals in early 2027.
  • Officials say many prospects lie in shallow water under 130 metres, sit close to existing infrastructure and include flow-tested discovery wells, factors that lower technical barriers and helped the province value the best estimate at roughly US$400 billion based on current European prices.
  • Industry groups welcomed the step toward development while regulators and the province flagged consultations with fisheries, Indigenous groups and environmental reviews as central next steps that will shape jobs, local processing plans and project approvals.
