- Carl Daniels, 34, of Eastbourne Avenue in Walker, was convicted by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court of rape, assault by penetration and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

- The attack occurred in the early hours of January 1 when Daniels pushed the woman against a fence, removed her lower clothing despite her resisting, and raped her.
- After the woman’s partner called police and confronted Daniels, he was pulled to the ground and punched repeatedly, leaving him with a black eye and forehead cuts that required stitches.
- Judge Carolyn Scott called the assault on the partner prolonged and said Daniels was under the influence of alcohol, while the court heard he had no prior convictions and character references were submitted in his defence.
