Newcastle Ex-Taxi Driver Jailed 9 Years for Deliberate Road-Rage Car Attack

The case shows how video plus forensic evidence can secure convictions.

Overview

  • Hasan Mohammed, convicted in March of causing GBH with intent, was sentenced on Wednesday to nine years in prison and banned from driving for 12½ years.
  • The attack happened on September 14 last year on Brighton Grove in Fenham after a family member threw a lollipop at his taxi as the group left the Persian Bite restaurant.
  • Mohammed made a three-point turn at traffic lights, then drove at the crossing family at about 33 mph in a 30 zone without braking.
  • He struck a grandfather in his 50s, who suffered fractures to his shoulder, leg and spine, internal bleeding, and later needed a full shoulder replacement.
  • Police arrested Mohammed 42 minutes after he fled, with CCTV, dashcam and forensic evidence helping secure convictions that a judge called the result of a road-rage attack.
