New York to Mail Up to $200 Energy Rebate Checks to 8.2 Million Households

The payments aim to reduce steep electricity costs by using a $1 billion state rebate program.

Overview

  • The state will begin mailing one-time POWER rebate checks starting Sept. 21 and continue distributions through December to about 8.2 million eligible households.
  • Payment amounts are scaled by filer status and income: joint filers under $150,000 get $200, joint filers $150,000–$300,000 get $150, and single filers under $150,000 get $100.
  • Recipients do not need to apply because the Department of Taxation and Finance will determine eligibility automatically from 2024 New York State resident tax returns.
  • The checks are funded by a $1 billion appropriation in the 2026–27 state budget and are separate from last year’s inflation refund program that also sent millions of checks.
