Overview
- Troop G in the Capital Region put the first Mustang on the road, with the remaining cars being outfitted for a statewide rollout by early to mid-summer.
- The fleet consists of 19 Ford Mustang GT coupes with a 5.0-liter V8 and about 480 horsepower for speed and aggressive driving enforcement.
- State Police will use the Mustangs mainly on highways and during visible enforcement campaigns, and they will not replace the existing SUV patrol fleet.
- Each car costs about $48,000, which officials say is roughly 30% less than a typical SUV patrol vehicle, not including added equipment.
- The cars will sit out winter due to rear-wheel drive, reviving a late-’80s and early-’90s NYSP practice and mirroring current use in several other states.
