New York, New Jersey Cut World Cup Transit Fares to MetLife Stadium

Sponsors will absorb part of the cost to keep state tax dollars out.

Overview

  • Following public criticism, New Jersey set the round-trip train to MetLife Stadium at $98, and New York cut the match-day bus to $20 with 20% of bus tickets reserved for state residents.
  • New Jersey’s governor said sponsors will cover part of the subsidy and that no New Jersey tax money will be used.
  • Officials will add vehicles, including yellow school buses, and boost available bus seats to 18,000 on five game days and 12,000 on three weekday matches.
  • Even after the rollback, the $98 train fare is almost eight times the usual $12.90 round trip.
  • With most parking removed for security and space at the East Rutherford venue, transit will move crowds for multiple games, including the July 19 final of the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
