New York Launches Yearlong Review of Lake Placid–New York City Winter Olympics Plan

A state-appointed committee will test whether a dual-host bid can meet costs, venue, transport, climate and calendar requirements to determine viability

Overview

  • Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the formation of an exploratory committee on Monday to study a joint Lake Placid and New York City Winter Games proposal without committing to an official bid.
  • The committee will be chaired by Ashley Walden, the president and CEO of the Olympic Regional Development Authority, and is expected to complete its assessment in about one year.
  • Officials said the review will examine costs, venue readiness, athlete housing, transportation logistics and climate risks so New York can judge whether a dual-host model would work.
  • No host year was named and observers note the earliest realistic opportunity on the Olympic calendar would likely be 2042 because 2034 and 2038 are effectively taken.
  • Lake Placid’s 1932 and 1980 legacy, its recent role as a sliding-sports backup and a climate study showing relative midcentury resilience are cited as key reasons for considering the site.
