Overview
- The state announced an eight-member exploratory committee on Monday, chaired by Ashley Walden, to carry out a roughly year-long review that stops short of an official International Olympic Committee bid.
- The committee will use subcommittees on finance, games operations, legal matters and community engagement and includes representatives from the governor’s office, New York City, U.S. senators and Lake Placid leaders.
- Officials and reports identify 2042 as the earliest realistic target if New York pursues a bid because the IOC has already allocated 2030, 2034 and is negotiating 2038 locations.
- The review will weigh reusing existing venues, recent Lake Placid investments, transport links between the Adirondacks and the city, climate suitability and the projected costs and economic benefits.
- The panel will gather public and stakeholder input and deliver recommendations to state leaders after its review, which could trigger formal negotiations with the IOC or a decision not to proceed.
