Overview
- As of Sept. 18, 2026 federal and local partners have operationalized a multi-agency security plan that includes a Secret Service Multi-Agency Coordination Center in Downtown Brooklyn and a Department of Homeland Security designation as a National Special Security Event.
- City officials say thousands of NYPD officers, specialized units, K-9 teams, aviation and harbor units and counter-drone capabilities will protect delegations and secure motorcades.
- The city has declared Gridlock Alert Days for Sept. 21–25 and announced sweeping street closures, rolling pedestrian and vehicle holds, temporary flight restrictions and waterway perimeters that will slow Midtown traffic and disrupt commutes.
- Officials expect frequent protests, especially around Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit, and have warned they will enforce security perimeters, seize unauthorized drones and pursue criminal charges for violations.
- Diplomatic attention will focus on artificial intelligence governance, the wars involving Iran and Ukraine, the Israel-Palestine conflict, Sudan, climate action and the contest to replace Secretary-General António Guterres at the end of his term, all of which is likely to drive high-stakes bilateral talks and demonstrations on the sidelines.
