Overview
- On Monday, J'Ouvert began before dawn and the main New York Carnival Parade stepped off at 11:00 a.m. along Eastern Parkway with the heightened security posture in place.
- Officials established 13 designated entry points that open as early as 2:00 a.m., where spectators face metal-detector screenings and bans on alcohol, weapons and drones.
- The NYPD deployed thousands of officers plus aviation units, mounted units, the bomb squad, counterterrorism teams and drones and said it will apply a zero-tolerance policy for violence.
- The city moved the parade finish to 5:30 p.m., shorter than in prior years, and the Department of Transportation issued extensive street closures and transit embargoes that will disrupt local travel.
- Organizers and attendees continued to celebrate Caribbean culture while community safety volunteers worked with police and officials warned the measures are intended to reduce late-day violence and speed crowd dispersal.
