New Study Finds Sharp Age Split in UK EV Plans as Labour Deadlines Loom

New polling shows EV purchase intent stuck at 38% despite looming sales bans.

Overview

  • Kwik Fit’s latest survey reports about 20% of drivers aged 18–34 intend their next car to be fully electric, compared with 11% of those over 55.
  • Overall, 38% of motorists plan to choose either electric or hybrid for their next vehicle, a share unchanged for two years.
  • Younger drivers show far greater openness to used EVs, with more than half willing to buy second‑hand versus 18% of over‑55s, and 42% of younger motorists seeing better value in used EVs compared with 9% of older drivers.
  • Openness to Chinese-made EVs also skews young, with 43% of 18–34s considering one versus 14% of over‑55s, in coverage that also notes recent sales growth for brands such as BYD.
  • The findings are set against Labour’s timelines that end new petrol and diesel sales in 2030 and require all new cars and vans to be zero-emission by 2035, with this year’s ZEV mandate target described as 28%.
