New Round of Metro Detroit Ramp Closures Takes Effect on I-696/I-75 and M-39/I-94

MDOT has posted detours for the latest phase of the multi-year rebuild.

Overview

  • Starting at 9 a.m. today, northbound M-39 to westbound I-94 and southbound M-39 to both eastbound and westbound I-94 close at the Southfield Freeway interchange.
  • At the I-75/I-696 interchange, new closures in effect through late May include westbound I-696 to southbound I-75, westbound I-696 to northbound I-75, and northbound I-75 to westbound I-696.
  • Posted detours include routing westbound I-696 to southbound I-75 via southbound M-53 (Van Dyke Avenue) and westbound M-102 (8 Mile Road), and westbound I-696 to northbound I-75 via northbound M-53 and westbound M-59.
  • An additional change begins in early April, when the southbound I-75 ramp to westbound I-696 will close with a signed detour via westbound M-102 and northbound M-10.
  • Drivers interviewed said they were not widely informed and expect significant backups as construction continues with eastbound I-696 detoured through 2026.
