New Rankings and ADAC Test Offer Split Verdict on Germany’s Rest Stops

Large-scale ratings point to many strong rural sites, with on-site checks flagging high motorway fuel prices and patchy infrastructure.

Overview

  • Two fresh assessments published Wednesday give drivers a split view by pairing millions of Google ratings with an ADAC on-site test.
  • Tripz.de analyzed 1.8 million Google reviews across 633 rest stops and found an average score of 3.9 out of 5, with Jägerheim in Lohne leading at 4.8 stars from more than 4,200 reviews.
  • Saxony posted the highest state average at 4.13 stars, and its stops in Großharthau and Doberschütz placed in the top ten, while sites near big cities tended to rate lower.
  • ADAC, which released its on-site test Wednesday, rated 40 locations with no 'very good' or 'very poor' results and warned drivers pay up to €0.54 more per liter for fuel on the Autobahn than at nearby off-exit stations.
  • The ADAC inspectors cited pricey shop offerings, weak child-friendliness and accessibility, and too few fast EV chargers, with most charging bays lacking shelter from weather.
