Overview
- A magnitude 6.2 quake struck off Mindanao on Monday at about 112 km depth, USGS recorded a Green alert for low likelihood of widespread damage and Phivolcs said the event originated on the Philippine Trench and is not linked to the June 8 M7.8.
- A shallow magnitude 6.7 hit near Palu on Tuesday at roughly 10 km depth, producing strong shaking, aftershocks, hospital evacuations and reports of scattered damage while casualty figures remained unconfirmed.
- Relief and search operations that began after the June 8 M7.8 continue, with the national disaster agency reporting deaths in the mid-60s, dozens missing and thousands of displaced people in southern Mindanao.
- Preliminary field surveys by Phivolcs found about 2 metres of coastal uplift and shoreline extension up to roughly 200 metres after the June 8 quake, exposing seabed, corals and harming local fisheries and access to shorelines.
- Regional agencies including USGS, Phivolcs, PTWC and Indonesia’s BNPB are keeping monitoring and alerting in place to track aftershocks, assess linkage between events and warn of secondary hazards such as landslides and liquefaction that threaten recovery efforts.
