Overview
- Rete Ferroviaria Italiana confirmed the new steel‑concrete span of about 550 tonnes was positioned overnight during the current work window that runs from 23:00 on Sunday 26 July to 11:00 on Thursday 30 July.
- The installation used a 2,000‑tonne crane and roughly 70 specialist workers in what RFI called one of the most complex engineering operations on the national network.
- Rail services through the Florence node have been cut by about half and the lines between Firenze Campo di Marte–Firenze Rifredi and Firenze Campo di Marte–Firenze Santa Maria Novella are suspended for the operation.
- Long‑distance trains are being rerouted via the Tyrrhenian line with journey increases up to about 2.5 hours and other connections use replacement shuttle buses between the two Florence stations that add about 1.5 hours.
- The project, reported at about €17 million, is multi‑phase with a final removal of the temporary footbridge planned for late October and a road reopening anticipated around 15 September while authorities run an assisted passenger plan during the summer peak.
