New PG&E Outage Cuts Power to About 7,400 on San Francisco’s West Side

The incident heightens regulatory scrutiny of PG&E following December’s widespread blackout.

Overview

  • An unplanned outage reported around 2:30 p.m. left roughly 7,378 to 7,400 customers without electricity centered near Golden Gate Park and the Sunset District, according to PG&E.
  • PG&E said crews were assessing equipment and posted an initial restoration estimate of 6:30 p.m. on its website, while the utility had not identified a cause.
  • Service interruptions were concentrated on the west side with reports from the Inner Sunset and Haight-area neighborhoods, including UCSF’s Parnassus campus and parts of the Lower Haight.
  • Customer counts fluctuated during the afternoon, with at least 7,178 outages recorded by 3:30 p.m., according to the utility’s map.
  • The new outage follows December’s major blackout that prompted an ongoing CPUC review, credits of $200 for residents and $2,500 for businesses, and announced plans by Sunset District business owners to sue PG&E.
