New Charges Target Alleged Disposal of Jacqueline ‘Mimi’ Torres-Garcia’s Body

A newly released DCF timeline says the case closed in March 2025 after a January video call with someone the mother identified as the girl.

Overview

  • New Britain police charged Jonatan Nanita with tampering with physical evidence and improper disposal of a body based on a tip that he moved a storage tote from a cemetery to an abandoned Clark Street home.
  • Nanita remains held on more than $5.7 million in total bonds, appeared in New Britain Superior Court after being booked on Oct. 22, and is due back in court next Tuesday.
  • Investigators say Jacqueline likely died in fall 2024 while the family lived in Farmington, her body was kept in a basement, and her remains were recovered Oct. 8 in a tote behind the abandoned property.
  • Search warrants say Karla and Jackelyn Garcia told detectives the child was regularly restrained with zip ties and denied food, and Karla allegedly said she and Nanita stopped feeding her about two weeks before the date she reported the death.
  • An autopsy noted malnourishment without recent traumatic injuries, while DCF says its last in-person contact was in 2022, it conducted a January 2025 video call before closing the case in March, and state child-advocacy oversight reviews are underway.
