Network Rail Sets 8-Day West Coast Main Line Closure After Easter Reopening

The shutdown lets engineers renew overhead lines on a £400 million upgrade.

Overview

  • The northern stretch between Preston, Lancaster and Fylde will close for eight days from Saturday, April 11, to Sunday, April 19, to renew overhead power lines.
  • During the shutdown, Avanti West Coast trains will divert via the Settle–Carlisle line, with replacement buses and a limited timetable in place.
  • The Preston–Oxenholme section reopened after the Easter weekend works that installed LED signal structures at Carnforth and upgraded overhead lines in Lancashire during Storm Dave.
  • Network Rail released drone and trackside video of the upgrades and urged passengers to check National Rail for live journey advice before traveling.
  • Drainage work on the Great Rocks freight line in the Peak District aims to stop flooding in a key tunnel, keeping freight moving while passenger upgrades progress.
