Netherlands Confirms Bird Flu at Kesteren Farm and Alphen Petting Zoo

Authorities set 10-kilometer transport bans to curb spread under nationwide housing rules.

Overview

  • At a breeder laying-hen farm in Kesteren, approximately 44,000 chickens are being culled following a confirmed avian influenza detection.
  • A 10-kilometer transport ban around Kesteren halts movement of birds, hatching and consumption eggs, manure and used litter in a zone covering about 30 poultry farms extending across the Nederrijn toward Rhenen, near Veenendaal and Amerongen.
  • In a separate case in Alphen aan den Rijn, bird flu was confirmed at the Zegersloot children's farm, with 73 infected birds culled by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).
  • A 10-kilometer transport ban also applies around the children's farm, and the NVWA is supervising measures and investigating how the virus reached the site.
  • These actions follow a national requirement in place since 16 October 2025 that keeps commercial flocks indoors and requires shielding for at-risk hobby birds.
