Netflix Schedules Global Theatrical Release for Charlie Vs. the Chocolate Factory with Star-Studded Voice Cast

The move signals Netflix is using selective, multiweek cinema windows and merchandising deals to build tentpole momentum before holiday streaming.

Overview

  • Netflix announced on Wednesday that Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory will open in theaters worldwide on November 5, 2027 and arrive on Netflix on December 22, 2027 after a 47-day exclusive theatrical window with Sony handling international distribution.
  • The voice cast is led by Taika Waititi as Willy Wonka and Kit Connor as Charlie Paley and adds Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo, Christopher Chung, Kate Winslet and Helena Bonham Carter.
  • Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan direct, Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo produce, and Waititi serves as an executive producer on the animated continuation that the studio says will include original songs, new characters and familiar faces.
  • Netflix has struck commercial ties for the release, naming Ferrero Group to launch a Wonka-branded food range in the U.S. and parts of Europe and appointing Moose Toys as the master toy partner timed to the film’s rollout.
  • The announcement follows several recent Netflix tentpoles given extended theatrical play and suggests the streamer will continue using targeted cinema windows and retail partnerships to win marquee filmmakers and boost box office visibility.
