Netflix Announces Más Allá de la Sociedad, a Three‑Part Documentary by J. A. Bayona and Carlos Torres

A filmed visit to the Valle de las Lágrimas reunites survivors, families and authors to reflect on fifty years since Flight 571

Overview

  • Netflix on Wednesday announced Más allá de la sociedad, a three-episode documentary created by J. A. Bayona and Carlos Torres and directed by Carlos Torres for global release in 2026.
  • The series was produced by Belén Atienza, Sandra Hermida and J. A. Bayona and brings together survivors of Flight 571, relatives of those who died and writers including Piers Paul Read and Pablo Vierci.
  • Filmed sequences include a visit by Bayona and much of the cast of La sociedad de la nieve to the crash site in the Valle de las Lágrimas to stage encounters that probe how real testimony and cinematic dramatization have interacted.
  • Creators say the project grew out of that trip as a way to close a chapter and thank those who shared their stories while tracing the personal and cultural consequences of the 1972 Andes crash.
  • The series aims to map five decades of memory and representation of the tragedy and could prompt renewed public and scholarly attention to how trauma is recorded, adapted and passed down across generations.
