Overview
- The revised increases take effect on 1 April 2026 for direct Eskom customers and from 1 July 2026 for municipal customers, with retail hikes set by municipalities during budget finalisation.
- Nersa’s redetermination awards Eskom an additional R54 billion in allowable revenue now and carries R19.7 billion into future increases, with a further ~R40 billion reported as likely to be rolled into later years.
- The decision follows the Pretoria High Court’s rejection of a prior Eskom–Nersa settlement and a fresh process that drew more than 2,000 public submissions.
- Municipalities are recalibrating proposals, with Nelson Mandela Bay’s indicative 9% increase flagged for revision once final bulk inputs are incorporated and public consultations conclude.
- An interim 87c/kWh concession for ferrochrome smelters remains in place on condition any shortfall is covered within the existing Eskom support package from government.
